Discover the magic of nature this summer at Glade Trust Nature Reserve. If you’re torn between exploring with nets or trays, why not enjoy both? Our full-morning event offers hands-on wildlife discovery for kids and adults alike. From pond dipping to bird ringing and moth spotting, this is a chance to connect with the wild in ways you won’t forget.

Explore the Underwater World with Pond Dipping and Minibeast Trails
Pond dipping is a favorite activity for children and adults who want to see what lives beneath the water’s surface. Using nets and trays, participants can catch and observe a variety of aquatic creatures such as:
Newts
Water beetles and dragonfly larvae
Freshwater shrimp and snails
Our minibeast trails also lead you through the reserve’s habitats to find insects and other small creatures hiding in the grass, under logs, and among the leaves. This hands-on approach helps children learn about ecosystems and the importance of water habitats.
Get Up Close with Birds in the Hand
One of the highlights of the morning is the live bird ringing demonstration. This involves carefully catching wild birds, placing small identification rings on their legs, and releasing them back into the wild. It’s a unique chance to see birds close up and learn about their behavior, migration, and conservation.

You might see species such as:
Robins
Blue tits
Wrens
Our experienced bird ringers will explain the process and answer questions, making it a fascinating experience for all ages.
Discover Moths and Night-Time Minibeasts
Although moths are mostly active at night, you can learn about these fascinating creatures during the day. We’ll introduce you to the different types of moths and bugs that visit the reserve after dark. You’ll find out how moths contribute to the ecosystem and why they are important pollinators.

This part of the event includes:
Identifying common moth species
Understanding moth life cycles
Spotting other nocturnal minibeasts hiding in the reserve
