Spreading Our Wings: Glade Trust Helps Owls Find Homes in the Local Community!
Here at the Glade Trust Nature Reserve, we're passionate about protecting and enhancing local wildlife. While our beautiful reserve provides a safe haven for countless species, we know that true conservation extends beyond our borders. That's why we're thrilled to announce our latest initiative: installing owl boxes in suitable locations within our local community!

A Community Effort for Our Feathered Friends
You might have seen us recently, ladders in hand, carefully situating new owl boxes in trees around the reserve. But our vision doesn't stop there. We've been working with local landowners and residents to identify prime spots for new owl homes, bringing the magic of these nocturnal hunters closer to you.
Why the outreach? The truth is, many of our beloved owl species, particularly the Barn Owl and the Tawny Owl, face increasing challenges finding natural nesting sites. As old barns are converted and ancient trees become fewer, these magnificent birds struggle to find safe, dry places to raise their young. By working together with the community, we can create a network of safe havens for them.

The Benefits of a Local Owl Population
Beyond the joy of seeing these incredible birds thrive, a healthy local owl population brings numerous benefits:
Natural Pest Control: Owls are amazing hunters! A single Barn Owl can eat thousands of voles and mice in a year, providing a completely natural and chemical-free method of pest control for gardens and agricultural land.
Biodiversity Boost: Owls are a vital part of our local ecosystem. By supporting them, we're strengthening the entire web of life in our area.
A Connection to Nature: Imagine hearing the hoot of a Tawny Owl from your garden, or catching a glimpse of a silent Barn Owl gliding across a nearby field at dusk. These moments connect us deeply to the wild world around us.
Our Recent Expeditions: High Above the Ground!
Our dedicated team has been busy over the past few weeks, scaling ladders and carefully positioning the new boxes. It's not just about hammering a box to a tree; it requires careful consideration of:
Location: The box needs to be high enough to be safe from ground predators, with a clear flight path for the owls.
Habitat: Proximity to open grasslands or meadows is crucial, providing hunting grounds for voles and other small mammals.
Orientation: Facing away from prevailing winds and rain helps keep the interior dry and cozy for potential residents.
Here's a glimpse of some of the efforts involved in getting these new homes ready:

It's a rewarding experience, knowing that each box we install could soon be home to a new owl family, enriching our local environment.
Get Involved!
